When Should You Take Family Photos for Christmas Cards in Houston?

When Should You Take Family Photos for Christmas Cards in Houston?

Every year, November seems to arrive out of nowhere.

Suddenly you’re thinking about Christmas cards, gifts, family gatherings, school events, and everything else that comes with the holiday season.

If you’re planning to use your family photos for Christmas cards, one of the easiest ways to make the holiday season less stressful is to schedule your photography session earlier than you think you need to.

September and October Are Great Months

For families in Houston and The Woodlands, September and October are some of my favorite months for family photography.

You can get your photos taken well before the holiday rush, giving you plenty of time to choose your favorite images and order your cards.

And if you’re planning a fall-themed session, these months give you plenty of beautiful seasonal options.

Why You Don’t Want to Wait Until December

December can get busy very quickly.

Between school events, Christmas parties, travel, shopping, and everything else happening during the holidays, adding a photo session to the list can feel like one more thing to squeeze in.

Scheduling your photos earlier means that part of your holiday to-do list is already finished.

Your photos are done.

Your cards can be ordered.

And you can actually enjoy the rest of the season.

What If You Want a More Traditional Christmas Look?

You don’t necessarily have to take your photos in October to use them for Christmas cards.

This is where Christmas mini sessions and styled studio sessions can be such a fun option.

If you love evergreen trees, Christmas décor, cozy textures, or a more classic holiday look, a Christmas-themed session can give you beautiful card images while also creating a completely different gallery from your fall photos.

What If You Need Photos for More Than Just Cards?

I always recommend thinking beyond the Christmas card.

You may want updated photos for grandparents, gifts, frames in your home, or even just to document how much your kids have changed since last year.

That’s one reason I love a full family session.

You have more time to capture a variety of images and personalities instead of only thinking about getting the perfect card photo.

How Early Should You Book?

If you already know you want family photos for your Christmas cards, I recommend planning sooner rather than later.

Fall is one of the busiest seasons for family photographers, and the most popular dates and locations tend to go first.

You don’t want to find yourself trying to squeeze in a session at the very last minute because your favorite weekend is already booked.

Don’t Overthink the Perfect Christmas Card Photo

And one final thing I always tell my families:

Your Christmas card photo doesn’t have to be perfect.

It doesn’t have to be everyone looking directly at the camera with the biggest smile.

Sometimes the best card image is everyone laughing together.

Or your kids hugging.

Or a little one looking up at you.

Those little moments are what make the photo feel like your family.

If you’re planning Christmas cards this year, fall is the perfect time to start thinking about your family photos. A little planning now can make the rest of the holiday season so much easier.
